We used spaghetti and plastic wrap to model muscle cells and how they are "packaged" in our muscles.
We made it to unit 4! Our first area of focus for "Movement" is on the joints and range of motion. Students completed two labs - one to check out the elbow of a cow and the other to make ROM measurements on their partners.
Check out our urinalysis pictures. We discussed microscopic, macroscopic and chemical analysis. Each pair of students read six case studies and selected four patients to test. They completed a urinalysis and attempted a diagnosis for each patient. As a class, we discussed the results and shared our thoughts on each diagnosis. Teams of three then worked together to create a brief presentation about one of the diseases. The afternoon class had some very thoughtful and quality presentations.
Students worked in pairs to figure out filtration, reabsorption and secretion in the nephron. This year we did posters rather than 3D models and I think it worked better. The students really seemed to focus on making sure they understood what they were putting on their poster. (Plus, they did awesome on their Lesson quiz!)
We are continuing our look into the urinary system this week. Today students dissected kidneys. The focus is on the major structures and functions of the kidney. As class wrapped up we discussed nephrons in preparation for tomorrow's project.
Today we had a wonderful opportunity to visit five health occupation programs at Jefferson College. These programs are a short walk across campus and we spent about 20 minutes in each programs primary classroom and lab space. Each program highlighted their specialty and many allowed students to have some hands-on experiences in their labs. Some of the programs had current college students present that helped with the hands-on activities and provided feedback on their major. Today's visit included: Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Radiologic Technology, and Biomedical Electronics Technician.
We started looking at urinary system today. Our focus today was on identifying the major organs and functions of this system. Each student group built the urinary system on their Maniken and completed a body system graphic organizer to depict the system. Next week we will dissect a kidney and dive into the nephron.
Today we looked at pre-exercise and post-exercise tidal volume and changes in oxygen levels. We added oxygen sensors to detect the oxygen percentage in each breath when you inhale and exhale.
